- Find somewhere else to do your dirty work
Make sure you and anyone in your household does ‘dirty work’, like crafting, messy hobbies, or cleaning pets in a designated space, such as in the garage or a spare room, rather than wherever they feel like. - Embrace 10 minutes of mini-tidying every day
There are some tasks that you’ll need to do daily in order to keep your house clean.Make your peace with it, and resolve to take out your rubbish, do your dishes and wipe down your bathroom and kitchen surfaces. Every. Single. Day.
- Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter
A HEPA filter will help to keep your home clean for longer by trapping dirt, dust, and allergens more effectively. - Go minimal
One big step forward in learning how to keep your house clean is to have fewer knick knacks and ornaments in your home to collect dust.If you have a collection of items, keep out a few curated pieces and pack the rest away, then you can rotate them periodically.
Textiles such as throw pillows and blankets also collect dust, so keep them away when you’re not using them.
- Buy an air purifier
Like your vacuum, always choose an air purifier with a HEPA filter to stop dust and allergens settling on surfaces. - Open windows enough, but not too much
Opening windows for at least 10-15 minutes every day is a great way to prevent any damp or mold issues in your home, especially in older buildings or during winter. However, keeping windows open all the time brings in dust and dirt that contributes to the household mess. Set a limit on how long they stay open, then close them up again.
- Multitask like a pro
Find something you enjoy and can do at the same time as cleaning or tidying, like listening to the latest episode of your favorite podcast or catching up on the phone, handsfree, with a friend. Your house will be spotless before you even realize you’re cleaning. - Delegate and communicate
Encourage everyone in the home to have designated jobs so they take their share of responsibility for keeping things nice. Communicating who’s expected to do what, and when, cuts out any arguments on ‘whose turn it is’ and encourages respect for what everyone contributes.
