10 Things You Need to Buy For Your Small Home

With a little apartment, it’s easy to feel like it’s not worth investing in ‘nice’ household items in favor of waiting until you get that bigger place, but even smaller places deserve some love.

Here are some of the essential investment pieces you won’t regret buying, even if you think your living situation might change. They’re move-proof picks that will stand the test of time and in our opinion are worth spending a little bit more on.

  1. A good mattress
Wherever you move, you’ll need to sleep, right? We spend a third of our life in bed, so a good mattress is one of the essentials. Plus it will last up to 10 years, so you won’t feel guilty at spending a little bit more.

It might take a bit of time and research to find the best one for you, and believe me, the most expensive is not necessarily the best: One of the best mattresses I’ve ever owned is a super cheap IKEA latex one.

Another great option that you can get directly from Amazon is this one:

  3. Kitchen trash can
One of the original small space mistakes I made, was in buying a smaller kitchen trash can for my kitchen. It drove me crazy with how often I needed to empty it, especially considering how little extra space a properly-sized trash can takes up. I replaced it with a bigger version and it’s much less of a headache.

we love the Simplehuman trash cans because they look great and they also store the liner bags inside at the back, meaning you don’t have to find somewhere to store them in your cupboards!

  5. Kitchen knives (and a sharpener)
They might not be exciting but good knives never go out of style and if you take good care of them, they can last a lifetime. Did you also know that you’re less likely to cut yourself on a sharp knife than a blunt one as it’s less prone to slipping when you cut?

Take a knife skills cookery class to learn how to chop like a pro and you can impress your friends too. I love the Wusthof brand to start your collection.

  6. Towels
There’s nothing like grabbing a fluffy fresh towel, plus they are the ultimate move-proof small space investment. Towels never change the style so if you want to buy quality, you can easily wait for the sales to pick up a bargain.

  8. Bedsheets
Even the biggest penny pincher will probably admit that they love owning luxurious bed sheets. Like towels, you can take bedding anywhere, and as with a mattress, you’ll get a lot of use out of them. When you know what you want, again lookout for the sales and you can get some brilliant deals.

I’m currently loving my real linen bed sheets from H&M which I pounced on last Black Friday. They’re cool at night-time and their laid back Scandi-style looks great on the bed. I researched a lot of expensive ‘investment’ linens online, but in the end, I opted for H&M as I heard some good recommendations and so far they’re super comfy!

  10. Home entertainment
If you love cozy evenings in like I do, then home entertainment is definitely a worthwhile investment. If you’re worried about space for a TV, then try a projector like this. The image won’t be as pin-sharp as a television but if you have a bare wall, it’s a great way to make every night feel like movie night!
