- Add more sauce
While it’s hard to change the sauce on the base of a frozen pizza, there’s nothing to say you can’t add some of your favorite sauce over the toppings. Try dropping half teaspoons of pesto, drizzle Mexican hot sauce, or even burger sauce. - Use some good quality meat
Frozen pizza meat toppings are usually thin on the ground and aren’t the best quality either. In fact, I almost always buy frozen cheese pizzas and add in any meat myself. You can add to the toppings with any good quality fresh meat you have like beef or sausage. - Add diced raw red onion or cook some sticky onions
- Make a Fiorentina pizza
- Add frozen corn or other frozen vegetables
You know you have some lurking at the back of the freezer and they’re great for bulking out a thin pizza cheaply if you’re feeding a crowd. - Try olives or capers
The perfect pairing for pizza and they last practically forever, raid the fridge for jars of olives or capers to add. - Sliced jalapenos
Adding heat is one of the best ways to jazz up a dull or bland pizza. - Top with any fresh herbs
But especially basil, oregano, or thyme. You can also sprinkle garlic granules over, once the pizza comes out of the oven. - Scatter crushed chilies after cooking
Or drizzle with a hearty dose of chili oil. - Top with arugula leaves, once cooked
My favorite for when you need a flavor hit and have hardly anything in the cupboards is to add some onion.
You can even cook up some fast sticky onions as follows: Slice 3 red (or brown) onions thinly, heat a pan with 2 tbsp of olive oil and cook the onions on a low heat for 15 mins with a pinch of salt (probably enough time for your pizza to cook.)
Once the onions have become soft and golden, add 2 tbsp of brown sugar and 2 tbsp of balsamic vinegar, mix thoroughly and keep on a low heat for another 5 minutes until the sticky mixture has been absorbed by the onions and they are caramelized.
If you want even stickier onions, simply increase the initial cooking time for the onions, always on low heat.
This is one of our favorite recipes, and one of the best ways to make frozen pizza that bit extra. Push the toppings in the center of the pizza out towards the edges to make a gap or well in the middle.
Crack one whole egg into a ramekin and tip it into the gap, then and cook in the oven as normal, (make sure this is at least 8 mins for the egg to cook.)If you’re not brave enough to try tipping a raw egg onto a pizza, you can also poach an egg and add it to the pizza after cooking.
Check out our post on perfect poached eggs for some tips.
The peppery goodness off fresh arugula adds a bit of zing to the taste of any pizza, it also goes well with shaved parmesan on top.
Plus, most importantly, you can convince yourself that your meal is at least partly salad!
