- Be consistent with color
If your room leads onto another section of your home, like a hallway, then use a consistent and complementary color scheme to tie the look together throughout. You want to avoid the situation where you’re in one room and can see a totally different or clashing color scheme in another.
You want the colors to flow through to each other which will give the illusion of more open space.
I love this website for playing around with complementary color schemes. This one will give you paint colors from an uploaded photo.
- Axe the big prints
Don’t do big, oversized prints when choosing throw pillows, blankets or other decorations. Use small-scale prints only. - Let there be light
Take advantage of natural light from windows and use either ultra-light window coverings or none at all. Use lightweight fabrics like gauzy voile and avoid heavy drapes.Make sure window coverings are the same light color as walls and ceilings so that they all blend in.
Mount your drapes on the wall – well above the top of the window – and have them fall to the floor, taking advantage of all the vertical space, and it will make the room appear taller and bigger.
- How to make a small room look bigger with mirrors
This trick is an old favorite: use large decorative mirrors in the room to make it look bigger, especially where they will reflect natural light from windows (for instance by hanging on the opposite wall).Don’t be afraid to go big and make a large feature out of your mirror.
- Curate
Use the space you have wisely. If you have collections of knickknacks you love, keep out a couple of key pieces and pack the rest away.Always leave enough space between ornaments and collections so that the area does not look busy and full, less is definitely more.
- Locate accent pieces carefully
Another visual trick is to place accent pieces closer to the corners of the room and try to keep the middle part of the walls free and clear of furnishings. This will elongate them. What is an accent piece? An accent piece is any piece of furniture or decoration that goes above and beyond basic function to give visual interest to the room.
A bed for instance wouldn’t normally be an accent piece but a decorative French armoire might be. Or an ordinary couch might not be considered an accent piece in the living room but an artsy carved coffee table would be.
So don’t line your walls with fancy pieces all along it, but move them to the corners and leave the middle of the walls free.
- Store more
If you plan to have shelving and bookcases along the walls, use the floor to ceiling shelves that go the entire height of the room. It makes the most of the space and makes the room feel taller too.
