RELATED: How to Clean Your Dishwasher (With Vinegar)
- Plastic desk organizers
What is that grey stuff that collects at the bottom of pen-holders? Is there a scientific name for it? I love a clean workspace so every so often I will throw my desk tidies in and they come up gleaming! - Pet bowls and dog toys
Much as they’re part of the family, I wouldn’t put pet bowls and dog toys in the same load as the human dishes. It is a great way to make sure your fur-baby has a clean surface to eat or drink from, however. Their favorite toys can also get a much-needed freshening up at the same time! - Silicone oven gloves
Silicone oven mitts like Chefaith Silicone Kitchen Gloves this since I got fed up with how quickly the fabric ones get stained and dirty from food – and they’re generally impossible to wash. These not only wipe clean for everyday spills but if you want to give them a more thorough wash, they can happily go straight into the dishwasher. - Razors and attachments for personal care items
Not suitable for anything that has inbuilt electric parts however the plastic clips that go on to razors, trimmers, shavers, and epilators should all be safe to go into your dishwasher. I always put these on the top rack on one of the shorter cycles to be safe. A great tip to keep small items together is to use a mesh laundry bag (the kind you would use for lingerie) - Plastic combs and brushes
Make sure to take off the hair first so it doesn’t get trapped in the filter but this is a great way to get rid of the accumulated product build-up on plastic combs and brushes. - Flip flops and rain boots
I wanted to include this for the definitive list because they can go into the dishwasher. But having said that, I personally wouldn’t put outdoor shoes of any sort into the dishwasher but would spot clean by hand instead. If you do choose to freshen up your footwear, you could consider cleaning your dishwasher afterward. - Toothbrushes and holders – and bathroom accessories
Again, leave out anything like an electric toothbrush, but non-electric toothbrushes, toothbrush holders, caddies and soap dishes can go it, It also gets them out-of-the-way while you clean the rest of the bathroom which helps if you have a small bathroom.
I only run my dishwasher when it is relatively full, which not only helps to get a cleaner finish on the items you put in there but it can also save water compared to rinsing and washing items by hand.
With all the action your dishwasher is now seeing, it makes sense to show it some TLC by giving it a good clean once in a while. Click here to find out how.
