How Quitting Facebook Changed My Life + 5 Tips to Make the Change

My Top Five Tips for Quitting Facebook

  1. Plan when
Decide when you’ll hit the big deactivate or delete button so you do it at a time when you’re motivated and have things to distract yourself with. I recommend starting with deactivating so you don’t lose your pictures or timeline and can come back if you ever do want to.
  2. Tell people about what you’re doing
Did you know that if you tell people about a goal or habit change, then you’re more likely to follow through with it? Let people know you’ll be ditching Facebook for a while – you can even invite some of your friends to join in your digital detox.
  3. Get social
Plan to be active on your favorite messaging apps or book in some facetime calls or meetups. Whatever it takes so you don’t feel out of the loop with your real-world friends, and stay connected in all the important ways.
  4. Work in some me-time
If one of your reasons for quitting Facebook is to help your mood or ease anxiety, prioritize self-care by something nice for yourself like having pampering DIY spa day, taking up yoga, or learning to meditate.
  5. Plan what you’ll do with that Facebook-free time
Take this as a golden opportunity to do something fulfilling with that extra time and mental energy. Maybe you want to work on some goals, learn a new skill, or just read a book you’ve always wanted to. Quitting Facebook changed my life so much for the better because I made space for other positive changes in its place.

How to Quit Facebook Gracefully

‘It’s not you, it’s me’…ok, now avoiding cliches, how do you quit Facebook gracefully?

If you connect with most of your closest friends in the offline world, then I would just keep it short and simple.

A status update like: ‘Dear Facebook friends, I’ve decided to take time out from Facebook for a while, to focus on some important projects I have going on (or insert suitable excuse), so you probably won’t see me online, but I hope you all continue to be well and I’m sure we’ll catch up again soon.’

If you have a lot of close friends on the platform, then it’s definitely a good idea to message or call them separately so you can tell them personally, and they don’t think they’ve done something wrong.

Take the opportunity to limit your screen time and replace some of those apps with (stylish) physical products
